Asperg

Are you interested in history and nature? Do you enjoy great panoramic views? Are you a fan of walks and/or drinking Sekt at sunset?

All this and more could be your experience in September as we take a guided tour in the English language of the Hohenasperg historical area and prison near Ludwigsburg. Member Alison Tyler and her husband Peter Müller will be organizing the day’s program and are looking forward to introducing everyone to their home town. Our tour guide will be Herr Herbert Paul, a retired teacher.

Meeting point: Asperg Train Station (S-Bahn) at 14:45

If you are arriving by train, please walk to the very end of the platform where the lift and steps are located – our meeting point will be at the top of these steps (Hirschbergstraße leading into Lehenstraße).

Our walk from the train station up Hohenasperg hill is known as “Schwitzgässle” (the sweaty path) and will involve walking up quite a few steps! But don’t worry, we will take it slowly and have 45 minutes to make it to the top.

If you cannot manage the walking portion, there is limited parking available on top of Hohenasperg – please let us know when you RSVP if you will need to meet us up there.

The tour itself will start at 15:30 and last approximately 90 minutes, ending at the prison museum. Our tour guide will introduce the contents of the museum from the outside and then we will have some time to go in and look at the exhibits (all in the German language).

Click here for a good description in German of some of the points of interest we may see on our tour.

Our tour will end with a glass of Sekt and time to enjoy the view.  According to the internet, the sunset that evening should be at around 19:22 and many people arrive to enjoy a glass of wine and enjoy the view at this time.  There is also a restaurant at the top of Hohenasperg that Alison will reserve a table for if there is interest. She will also have a map available of the way down to the train station along a lighted street for those leaving earlier or later than the group.

We recommend you wear comfortable walking shoes and, as with any outdoor/indoor activity, wearing layers is a good idea and bring your rain jacket.  September is usually good weather but anything is possible these days. Make sure you eat well beforehand or bring snacks, as it will be a long day! The minimum age for the tour is 5 year old, but please keep in mind the long hike and day if you are planning to bring a child along.

This is a +1 event, which means:

  • Any IWCS member plus one guest are welcome to attend.
  • Your +1 can be a partner, spouse, older child, or friend.
  • You and your guest each pay the member cost listed below.

The cost of this event is €4 per person, paid in advance. The IWC Stuttgart will be subsidizing the remainder of the event fees for the tour. Any food and drinks ordered are the responsibility of the member and her guest (except for the sunset glass of Sekt, which is a gift from your hosts!!).

To reserve your spot, please RSVP using the form below or respond in the pending Facebook event. To confirm your reservation, please transfer the €4 per person to the IWCS bank account no later than September 15th. If you have any extenuating circumstances that keep you from getting the funds to us by that date, please speak directly with the host so we don’t assume you are no longer interested.

Prepayments are non-refundable after the payment deadline. Members who have to cancel at the last minute are welcome to find another member or guest to send in their place.
