NEW INTEREST COMMUNITY MEET UPS IN 2020

We are excited to announce two new interest community meet ups available to members starting in March and April!

WEEKLY TENNIS GROUP

First up, our Sports Community has started a weekly tennis group that is open to all non-beginners (they are mostly a step or two above absolute beginner level, roughly a 3.5 on the USTA ranking chart). It’s a friendly social group that meets Wednesdays at lunchtime at courts near the Fernsehturm.

If you would like to get more details or join them, use the contact form below or join the Sports Community Facebook group to be included. There will be no Facebook events for this meet up.

MONTHLY BOOK CLUB SPIN OFF (TRIAL)

Over in the Books and Reading Community, our monthly morning book club has become so popular that it’s overflowing! Before it gets too big and unwieldy, they’ve decided to branch off and create a monthly evening spin off group to release some of the pressure. This group will be reading the same book as the morning meet up, but getting together to discuss it the second Thursday evening of each month.

The plan is to hold two or three trial meetings to see if there is enough interest to keep it going. If you’ve always wanted to join the book club but can’t make morning meetings, here is your chance! Use the contact form below for more details or join the Books and Reading Community Facebook group and watch for the Facebook event invitation for the first meeting on April 9th.

IWCS Member Advertising Policy

We have a lot of amazing members who own small businesses and a common question is, “How can I make my fellow members aware of what I have to offer?”

The IWCS Steering Committee actually considered this question in depth a few years ago and came up with an official advertising policy for the club. If you have a service or product that you would like to let other members know about, here are some tools you can use:

Include your business in our Member Business List
Sandra has created a section in the monthly newsletter that includes your business information for members to refer to as needed. Contact her by replying to any of our newsletters or weekly reminders if you would like to be included!

Personal Networking
We encourage all of our business owners to attend IWCS events, get to know people, and share information about your skills and services in person. You can also add members you have met as friends on Facebook, who will then see any promotions you post on your personal page.

Share your expertise in an event just for members
If your business involves a special skill that you might be willing to teach to other members at a private workshop, we are happy to have you do so with your promotional materials on hand to share at the end. For example, if you are a photographer, maybe volunteer to give a seminar about taking photos at night.  Talk to one of the activities coordinators about getting an event into our official calendar.

Sponsor the next Annual Charity Event
Donate your services or buy advertising at an upcoming Annual Charity Event and your sponsorship will be promoted at the event and on our website. Keep your eyes on the newsletter for information about the next big event.

We love our members’ entrepreneurial spirit and want to see them succeed! But please be aware of what our advertising policy does not allow:

🚫 We cannot hold any direct sales events for the IWCS (such as Tupperware) nor pay members for a presentation at an event.

🚫 Members are asked not to post business promotions in the member Facebook groups. We would like to keep those spaces ad free.

🚫 The shared member directory should not be used to send unsolicited emails to other members. Please do not send business emails to anyone who hasn’t opted in to your mailing list.

If you have any additional questions about this policy, please talk to Emily or Sandra for clarification.

IWCS Focus and Facebook Groups Update

facebook-793049_1920

We’ve got some big changes coming up in our member Facebook Groups and focus group meet ups!

Currently, our club offers “focus groups” centered on specific interests that meet regularly and an assortment of Facebook Groups to go with them. Some of the focus groups have Facebook Groups, but not all. And not all of our Facebook Groups have focus groups that meet up regularly. This has caused plenty of confusion, especially to new members.

So starting this month, Emily will be working on reorganizing and restructuring our focus groups and Facebook Groups. Here’s what you can look forward to:

Most of our current Facebook Groups will be rebranded into “Interest Communities” modeled after our crafting and cooking Facebook Groups. We will start with the following Communities:

  • Food/cooking
  • Sports
  • Books
  • Crafts
  • Photography
  • Gaming
  • Mothers Corner
  • Languages

These Facebook Groups will be renamed in a straightforward manner to make them easy to find, for example, “IWCS Food & Cooking Community.” These Communities will be open to all current members and will be used for forum-like discussions of that topic.

The Communities will also be used to plan regular events, which we are re-branding as “Get Togethers.” These are the current focus groups such as “Breakfast & Books” and “Stitch ‘n Bitch.”

Each community can have zero, one, or multiple Get Togethers associated with them. Currently those are:

  • Monthly walking group
  • Strokes Club
  • Breakfast & Books
  • Stitch ‘n Bitch
  • Mother’s Corner Playgroup
  • German Conversation

Please note that joining a Community does not mean you have to attend an associated Get Together. For example, if you want to talk about a new hiking tour you took last weekend in the IWCS Walking & Hiking Community or just want to ask for recommendations, feel free to do that without ever attending the monthly walks Sandra puts in the newsletter. You can be a member of all the IWCS Facebook Communities without ever attending a single Get Together.

Alternatively, you may attend a Get Together without joining the associated Community – you have the choice to do as much or as little as you wish. And if you don’t use Facebook at all, you may of course continue to attend any of the Get Togethers that interest you, as they will still be listed in the monthly newsletter.

Some additional notes about this process:

  • Communities are welcome to create additional Get Togethers (such as an evening book club in addition to Breakfast & Books)  if there is demand for it. The same goes for creating additional Interest Communities – talk to Emily for details!
  • Purely social Get Togethers will not be associated with a Community because they aren’t centered around an interest (Happy Hour, Ladies who Lunch, Buy/Sell/Trade) and will be listed in a separate section of the newsletter to avoid confusion.
  • The Facebook Interest Communities will all have Emily as an admin + a local member for purely administrative (membership-related) purposes.
  • We ask that Facebook events for monthly Get Togethers be created in the main Member Group only and not in the Communities for consistency’s sake (the host is welcome to share the event link to the Community page).

If you have any questions or feedback about this process, please use the contact form below to message Emily directly. Look for these changes to start happening in May!
