IWCS 2020 HOLIDAY GIVING TREE FOR FRAUEN HELFEN FRAUEN

In keeping with one of our favorite annual traditions, the IWCS is once again supporting Frauen helfen Frauen e.V. by creating a virtual Holiday Gift Tree for its residents this December!

Every year our members can sign up to buy gifts for the women and children living in the Frauenhaus. You will receive the age of the women or the age/gender/wish of the children to assist you in choosing what to buy. If you would like to take part, please let Sandra know in the event that can be found in the members Facebook group OR by using the RSVP form at the end of this post.

We already have some ages and wishes, so you can go ahead and start shopping! We do not yet know how many people we need, so we will assign folks on a first-come, first-serve basis. Please choose a gift valued between €15-20 and try to keep in mind that the shelter is multicultural and many of the families might not yet have strong German skills.

You will need to wrap the gift and add a tag with the age/gender information you were given to identify who it is for when they have their annual party. You can drop the finished gifts off at Sandra’s house in Stuttgart-Zazenhausen or mail them to her.

Thank you to all of our members for your continuing enthusiasm for this project every year!

FOR MEMBERS ONLY: MUSHROOM HUNTING

MUSHROOM FORAGING WORKSHOP WITH ABENTEUERREICH
For members and their families
Sunday, October 18th from 13:00 – 16:00
Location: Schorndorf area, exact location given a week beforehand

Nearest station: Ride sharing is recommended
Maximum 20 participants

We are pleased to be working with local guides Abenteuerreich again this fall!! Our guide will meet us in the car park and give a short intro before proceeding into the woods with us to learn how to recognize and collect edible mushrooms.

We will learn which kind of mushrooms grow in which places, what is a cauliflower mushroom, can one eat giant puffballs and which mushrooms make great tinder. After collecting all our goodies we will then gather to prepare and sample a little of what we have collected.

Please note: as with prior Abenteuerreich tours, the tour will be conducted in German. It’s a great chance to practice your German comprehension and there will be plenty of members there who can help translate (such as your host, Alex Elwin).

This 2-3 hour event will take place in the woods, so please bring along proper walking shoes, a raincoat, camera and rucksack with something to drink. Wheelchairs and strollers are possible to use on the main forest path and babies can come along at no cost. We will be outside, so masks are not required but recommended for when social distancing isn’t possible.

The cost of this event is €10 per adult, €5 per child (5-17) or €20 per family, paid in advance. The tour guide will be sponsored by the IWCS and this is a Round Up For Charity event. All proceeds will benefit Frauen helfen Frauen.

To reserve your spot, please RSVP using the form below or respond in the pending Facebook event. To confirm your reservation, please transfer your participation fees to the IWCS bank account no later than Friday the 2nd of October. If you have any extenuating circumstances that keep you from getting the funds to us by that date, please speak directly with the host so we don’t assume you are no longer interested.

Prepayments are non-refundable after the payment deadline. Members who have to cancel at the last minute are welcome to find another member or guest to send in their place.

MEMBERS ONLY: WORLD OF TRAMS MUSEUM

IWCS members are invited to join host Alison Tyler for an English-language tour of the Strassenbahn Museum in July!

In this multifaceted exhibition in a large 2,500 square meters, our tour guide will show us the highlights of Stuttgart’s tram history. Marvel at the first horse-drawn tram from 1868 and experience the development of the vehicles up to the “Stuttgart classic” GT4, which was replaced in 2007 by today’s light rail. Detailed themed islands take up individual aspects from operation and technology and present them particularly vividly. A separate exhibition deals with the development of the buses.

We will meet at 12:45 on Sunday, July 26th at the payment point near the main entrance to pick up our tickets and our tour will start promptly at 13:00. The English-language tour will be 60-90 minutes long and afterwards we will have the option to ride the Old Timer Line #23 as a round trip.

SUPPORT THE FRAUENHAUS WITH AMAZON SMILE

By IWCS member Laura L.

Hey fellow members!

Just wanted to remind you that even though we currently cannot fundraise for Frauen Helfen Frauen with in-person activities, there is still a way we can support them – by buying things on Amazon Smile instead of the regular Amazon site.

If you have not yet heard, Amazon Smile is basically the same website as Amazon, the only difference being that the Amazon Smile Foundation will donate 0.5% of the purchase price of eligible products to the charitable organization of your choice.

In order to set this up, all you have to do is

  1. Visit Amazon Smile and log into your account
  2. Select “Frauen helfen Frauen e.V. Stuttgart” as the organisation which you would like to support
  3. For future purchases, make sure to always start your online shopping via the Amazon Smile website.

Android users can use this handy shortcut to enable the Smile version of Amazon in their Amazon shopping app.

Sorry iPhone users, this is not currently possible via the iOS Amazon app but you can set up a shortcut on your phone to the Smile browser website.

Enjoy your shopping and hope to see you in person again soon!

AGM 2020 – Bring Your Spare Change for Charity!

Let us help you declutter your purses and pockets with our annual AGM coin collection!

Every year we ask members attending the Annual Meeting to bring along their excess change for our collection for Frauen helfen Frauen.

Check your pockets, your wallets and your junk drawers and bring all those annoying and useless little one and two cent coins (and higher!) with you to the AGM and help us make a difference for the ladies at the Frauenhaus.

MEMBERS ONLY: OP ART EXHIBIT AND TOUR (+1 EVENT)

IWCS members and their guests are invited to join host Emily Born for an English-language tour of the special exhibit “Vertigo” at the Kunstmuseum Stuttgart in March!

Warning: this exhibit is not for the faint of heart (or eyes!). It showcases the jarring world of the mid-1950s Op Art movement, meant to manipulate our vision and overwhelm our bodies. They have also included some 16th-18th century art pieces that also played with optical effects and can be considered precursors to the movement.

We will meet at 17:15 on Friday, March 27th to pick up our tickets and our tour will start promptly at 17:30. The English-language tour will be 90 minutes long and the museum is open until 21:00 on Friday nights so there is plenty of time afterwards to visit the regular collection if you wish. Let Emily know if you are interested in going out for drinks or dinner afterwards so we can make reservations.

This is a +1 event, which means:

  • Any IWCS member plus one guest are welcome to attend.
  • Your +1 can be a partner, spouse, adult child, or friend (adults only)
  • You and your guest each pay the member cost listed below.

The cost of this event is €5 per person, paid in advance. The tour guide will be sponsored by the IWCS and this is a Round Up For Charity event. All proceeds will benefit Frauen helfen Frauen.

To reserve your spot, please RSVP using the form below or respond in the pending Facebook event. To confirm your reservation, please transfer the €5 per person to the IWCS bank account no later than Sunday the 22nd of March.
