SUPPORT THE FRAUENHAUS WITH AMAZON SMILE

By IWCS member Laura L.

Hey fellow members!

Just wanted to remind you that even though we currently cannot fundraise for Frauen Helfen Frauen with in-person activities, there is still a way we can support them – by buying things on Amazon Smile instead of the regular Amazon site.

If you have not yet heard, Amazon Smile is basically the same website as Amazon, the only difference being that the Amazon Smile Foundation will donate 0.5% of the purchase price of eligible products to the charitable organization of your choice.

In order to set this up, all you have to do is

  1. Visit Amazon Smile and log into your account
  2. Select “Frauen helfen Frauen e.V. Stuttgart” as the organisation which you would like to support
  3. For future purchases, make sure to always start your online shopping via the Amazon Smile website.

Android users can use this handy shortcut to enable the Smile version of Amazon in their Amazon shopping app.

Sorry iPhone users, this is not currently possible via the iOS Amazon app but you can set up a shortcut on your phone to the Smile browser website.

Enjoy your shopping and hope to see you in person again soon!

MEMBERS ONLY: CANNING AND FERMENTING WORKSHOP (+1 EVENT)

Fruit & Vegetable Canning and Fermenting Workshop
For members +1 guest
Sunday, October 13th at 13:00
Location: Meghan’s home in Kornwestheim
Nearest station: Kornwestheim Hbhf
Cost: €20 per person

Please join us for an afternoon preserving fruits and vegetables. In this workshop we will learn three different preserving methods:

  • Hot Water Bath Canning – Spicy California Mix (cauliflower, celery, carrots, bell peppers, garlic and spicy peppers to taste) OR Tomato Salsa (tomatoes, onions, peppers, spices)
  • Ceramic Crock Fermentation – Sauerkraut (cabbage)
  • Ready to eat spread – Pumpkin Butter (fresh pumpkin and spices)

This is a hands-on workshop, where we will go thru the steps and benefits of each method and you will be chopping, stirring, boiling, and brining your hearts out. Meghan will provide the fruit, veggies, additional ingredients and the jars for the Pumpkin Butter and Spicy Califonia Mix or Salsa. The whole process will take about three hours.

Because of the wait time involved in canning and fermentation, there will be a few weeks lapse before some of the items will be ready to take home and eat. However, each participant will leave that day with two small jars of Pumpkin Butter spread. The California Mix or Salsa will be ready approximately two weeks after the workshop and 5-7 weeks later, the sauerkraut will be ready. We will work together to get the finished items to everyone.

We will be doing lots of chopping! Each participant should bring their own cutting board and 1-2 sharp knives for chopping fruit and vegetables. Additionally please bring a reusable container for the sauerkraut to be put into once it is ready (ca. 250-500 grams).

Beverages and light snacks will also be provided. Meghan’s place is a short five-minute walk from the station. Also there is plenty of public parking at the apartment.

This event is a charity fundraiser – your cost is a €20 donation at the door. All money collected will go to our designated charity, Frauen helfen Frauen.

This is a +1 event, which means:

  • Any IWCS member plus one guest are welcome to attend
  • Your +1 can be a partner, spouse, child age 13 + up, or friend
  • You and your guest each pay the cost listed above

Payment is due on the day of the event, however you must confirm your reservation to reserve your spot via the pending Facebook event or using the form below if you aren’t on Facebook. Space is limited to 12 participants, so reserve your spot now!

MEMBER + FAMILY EVENT: OPEN AIR MUSEUM WITH ENGLISH LANGUAGE TOUR

Outing to the Freilichtmuseum in Beuren with English-Language Tour
This event is for members and their families
Sunday, October 20th at 11:00
Location: Freilichtmuseum Beuren, In den Herbstwiesen, 72660 Beuren
Nearest Stop : Molkerei in Beuren (best reached by car)
Cost: €10 per family or €5 for an individual

Join member Katja Zajac for a day in the countryside at the open air museum in Beuren! This recreated historical village tells the story of life in the nearby Swabian Alps with twenty different buildings, including farms, houses, workshops, and a bakery.

Children will love the many animals who live in the village (chicken, rabbits, goats, and sheep) and there is even an old-fashioned corner store with candy and sweets to buy.

We will have a one-hour English-language tour explaining the history of the houses and their inhabitants, life on the Swabian Alb as a farmer, and what a typical childhood was like in the area long ago.

Afterwards we will make a reservation for lunch at the museum restaurant (optional) and then you are free to spend the rest of the day exploring the museum grounds which include a playground and an orchard. The grounds are wheelchair and stroller friendly and open until 18:00. Please let Katja know if you are interested in lunch at the Engelberg restaurant at 12:30!

Audio guides in English are available for the permanent exhibition and wagons are available to borrow (20 euro deposit). We are welcome to bring along our own food and drink, or even a picnic lunch for those not joining us at the restaurant.

All members of your immediate family are invited to come along! The tour guide and museum entrance will be sponsored by the IWCS, but we are requesting pre-paid donations of €10 per family or €5 for an individual to reserve your space (maximum 25 participants total). All donations will be included in our annual donation to the Frauenhaus.

To reserve your spot, please RSVP in the Facebook event being set up in the members group or use the form below if you are not on Facebook. To confirm your reservation, please transfer the your family’s donation to the IWCS bank account no later than October 10th. If you have any extenuating circumstances that keep you from getting the funds to us by that date, please speak directly with the host so we don’t assume you are no longer interested.

Prepayments are non-refundable after the payment deadline (we will be charged by the tour company after that date). Members who have to cancel at the last minute are welcome to find another member or guest to send in their place.

IWCS Charity Cocktail Party – Tickets on sale in May

We’re really looking forward to our fundraising cocktail party on July 19th! Funds raised through ticket sales will be added to our annual contribution to the Frauenhaus women’s shelter  run by Frauen helfen Frauen e.V here in Stuttgart.

Even though this fundraiser is not our usual full-blown annual charity event, we still have a theme! This year we are excited about the theme ROOFTOP MENAGERIE because this event will be held at the top of the gorgeous Jaz Hotel in Stuttgart and we hope to get a little wild. We would like to encourage you to ‘dress the theme’ with your own interpretation but for some inspiration, check out our Pinterest board.

For 2019’s largest fundraising event of the year, IWCS members are invited to bring a +1 guest but tickets will be limited this year to just 40 guests total. With such limited numbers it’s important to buy your tickets early to avoid disappointment. Your RSVP in the Facebook event does not guarantee you a ticket; you must transfer your payment to the IWCS bank account to receive your confirmation.

All members will receive an email next week with all the necessary details about tickets, going on sale May 6th.

Frauen helfen Frauen supports women and children at risk in the greater Stuttgart area through its Frauenhaus, crisis assistance and counselling and support services. You can learn more about how IWCS donations have helped support them here.

2019 FUNDRAISING UPDATE

So far we’ve raised several hundred euros toward our annual fundraising target of €1500 but we still have many fundraising dedicated events coming up. With your support we can meet our annual contribution goals!

Some of the highlights so far have included:
Bake Off Viewing Party – €90
Clothes Swap  – €70
Fondue Lunch – €136

Upcoming events:
Candle Making Workshop
Wine Tasting walk in Hohen Asperg
Rooftop Menagerie Cocktail Party

Hey member! Yes, you.

Perhaps one of the most under-appreciated aspects of being an IWCS member is the potential to use the network for personal growth. Did you know we even mention personal growth in our mission statement?

‘…the club offers opportunities for involvement that not only look good on a resume but also make members feel good inside.’

Taking the initiative to organize anything requiring “personal engagement” in a country where you might not speak the language can be daunting. Transforming an idea into one that works in Stuttgart can be incredibly frustrating, challenging, exhilarating and rewarding all at the same time. I learned this firsthand when I became involved with the Annual Charity Event during my second year in Germany – it’s not easy and takes real resilience but you would be surprised how far a little determination can go!

Maybe you’ve thought about doing something to give back but you’re not sure how. Perhaps you’d like to work collaboratively to reach a goal but find yourself stumped on how to start.

We can help.

With our support, many of our members have transformed their personal interest into a fundraising opportunity to support women and children in crisis through our charity partner, Frauen helfen Frauen e.V.

In the past club members have held make-up parties and donated a portion of the profits; hosted themed get-togethers such as the annual Great British Bake Off Final Viewing Party and Clothes Swap; and organized a club-wide family Summer Party where we donated the deposit money from our bottles! Both small and big ideas that add up to an impressive contribution when taken together.

We’d love to help you take an idea or something you love doing already and transform it into something that really counts.

Fundraising needn’t always be a gala event. There are plenty of ways to raise money:

  • set a goal and get your network to pledge donations
  • sell some home-made preserves, craft or artwork
  • organize a day trip with a group of kids
  • offer a service (face painting, yoga instructor, tour guide, German language tutoring, musician etc) for free
  • hold a garage/tag/jumble sale
  • organize a car rally or a scavenger hunt
  • donate a raffle prize

And if all that is simply not for you, why not get behind our other members already planning charity events this year? Check out this blog post with all the 2019 plans and details!!!

Yours in Personal Growth,
Claire DeVaney

What’s On: 2019 Charity Events

Back in October, we made an announcement that we wouldn’t be planning an Annual Charity Event in 2019. Our team decided to take a break from the big events this year to focus on a smaller and more personal approach.

We promised to update you on our 2019 program so that members can still help make a difference in the lives of the women and children at the Stuttgart Frauenhaus.

Here are some events already on the schedule which will directly support our fundraising efforts this year – click on the photos to see details!

2019 clothes swap

2019 coin collection

2019 book swap

And that is just the first quarter! Some charity events being considered for the rest of the year include a fondue lunch at a member’s home and a night out with cocktails somewhere nice.

Additionally, this year we are restructuring how we price some of our monthly special events (generally tours and cultural events). You might also notice us requesting a donation for some events in lieu of a participation fee. For other events we will start “rounding up” the oddly-priced member prepayment amounts, giving you a nice round number to transfer and some extra change for our 2019 collection.

We hope you enjoy what’s on offer and even think about getting involved in organizing a smaller event yourself! Check our Claire’s blog post about that here.

Here’s to a successful 2019 year of charity!

Members Only Clothing Swap to Benefit Frauen Helfen Frauen

CLOTHING SWAP TO BENEFIT FRAUEN HELFEN FRAUEN
For IWCS members + 1 guest (ladies only!)
Sunday, February 10th at 14:00
Location: Claire’s home in Stuttgart
Limit 10 guests – donation of 10 euros per person requested

Hosts: Claire DeVaney

You know those clothes that you put on, then take off again thinking “I love it, but it’s just not me”? Those ones that looked good on the hanger but just don’t feel right? We all have them…so why not come along to our clothes swap and share them.

Here’s how it works: bring along some good quality women’s clothing, shoes, or accessories to swap with one another (please no used bathing suits, lingerie etc.). And not just clothes! Feel free to bring along gently worn shoes, handbags, jewelry, scarves and unopened beauty products to swap.

Please bring items you’d be happy to give to your friends NOT things that need to be binned. We’ll need clothes of all sizes and they should be washed, ironed, and in good condition (no holes or stains).

We are requesting that each guest bring 10 euros per person as a donation to cover some drinks, nibbly bits, and a donation to Frauen helfen Frauen.

This is a +1 event, which means:

  • Any IWCS member plus one (female) guest are welcome to attend.
  • Your +1 can be a friend or adult family member.
  • This event is limited to 10 guests total.

To start the reservation process, please RSVP in the pending Facebook event or use the form below to contact the hosts if you are not on Facebook.
