In keeping with their mission of opening the world to its visitors, the Linden Museum in Stuttgart is offering another eye-opening exhibition called “Oishii! Japan’s Food Culture”. „Oishii!“ means “It tastes good” and in Japan it is one of the most commonly used word to describe food. This expression goes hand in hand with the social and cultural identity of the one who eats.

The Linden’s collections are intended to present the diversity of human cultures and facilitate emotional and intellectual encounters and this exhibition does not disappoint. This coming March 15th, we are excited to offer an evening of culture and fine Japanese cuisine. This special exhibition will cover the technological achievements necessary for the food production and preparation, the changing Japanese eating habits throughout history, who eats what and when, Sake the “holy drink”, and the ever important tea culture. After the tour, IWCS members and their +1 guest will enjoy a three-course Japanese dinner at Hegel 1, organized just for us.

This is a +1 event, which means:

  • Any IWCS member plus one guest are welcome to attend.
  • Your +1 can be a partner, spouse, adult child, or friend.
  • You and your guest each pay the member cost described below.

The 60 minute tour will starts at 6:45 and will be be followed immediately by the meal. The IWC Stuttgart will be subsidizing the event by covering all guided tour and entrance fees. The only portion you and your guest will be responsible for is the €30 dinner fee (per person) plus your drinks for the evening. To hold the event we need at least 10 people confirmed and paid to the IWCS bank account no later than February 28th. The maximum number of participants is 25 so signup today!

If you have any extenuating circumstances that keep you from getting the funds to us by that date, please speak directly with the host so we don’t assume you are no longer interested. Prepayments are non-refundable after the payment deadline. Members who have to cancel at the last minute are welcome to find another member or guest to send in their place.

To RSVP and receive the bank account information, please send an email to Billie using the form below.

ENGLISH TOUR OF PLOCHINGEN AND HUNDERTWASSERHAUS

Plochingen & Hunderwasserhaus Tour
Sunday, May 22nd at 10:00
Location: Princess Hotel, Widdumstraße 3, 73207 Plochingen
Nearest station: Plochingen Hauptbahnhof
Hundertwasser Haus
In our quest to learn more about the surrounding areas of Stuttgart, we are stopping in at Plochingen next. It isn’t every day that we get the opportunity to hear about a local town’s history as well as see works by the famous artist and architect, Hundertwasser.

Friedensreich Regentag Dunkelbunt Hundertwasser was an Austrian artist and architect whose artistic vision expressed itself in pictorial art, environmentalism, philosophy, and design of facades, postage stamps, flags, and clothing (among other areas). While his real last name was “Stowasser” he went by his pseudonym Hundertwasser. He was born just prior to WWII and survived by posing as a Christian and even joining the Hitler Youth.

He passed away in February 2000 and was most famous for his opposition to the “straight line” and any standardization. Common themes in his work included bright colors, organic forms, a reconciliation of humans with nature, and a strong individualism.  While his best known work is in Vienna, we are happy to have a unique and interesting Hundertwasser building in Plochingen that we will be seeing on this tour.

Learn more about the artist in this entertaining design podcast.

After the tour, all participants are invited to join us for an optional breakfast buffet (not a brunch) at the Princess Hotel.

We would like to say thanks to Plochingen local and IWCS member, Katja, for her help with the planning of this event.

All details are as follows:

  • Tour: 60 minutes in English of downtown Plochingen and Hundertwasser house
  • Meeting Point: Princess Hotel (Widdumstraße 3, 73207 Plochingen)
  • Meeting Time: 9:50
  • Maximum 25 participants; members and their families are welcome to attend this event
  • Strollers for little ones are OK
  • The tour is free for IWCS members and their families
  • Breakfast is 15 euros per person, payable at the hotel (includes drinks)

To RSVP, please use the contact form below or sign up via the pending Facebook event.

Mercedes Benz StadiumThe Mercedes-Benz Arena, home to the top-tier Bundesliga VfB Stuttgart, is more than just a football stadium. It has played an important part in German history, having hosted both the German’s first international football match after World War II in 1950 as well as the first match after German reunification in 1990. In both cases the ever-neutral Switzerland was the opponent.

The current stadium design allows for over 60,000 onlookers and is considered one of the finest in Europe. Please join the IWCS for a 90-minute tour of the stadium on Saturday, July 23rd at 10:30. The tour includes the press rooms, media hall, mixed-zone, business suits, fan meeting point, standing area in the Cannstatter Kurve, changing room area, players tunnel, and inner stadium.

This tour is open to all members and their families. Please note that while there is no minimum age, strollers are not permitted on the tour.

ENGLISH LANGUAGE TOUR OF WEISSENHOF ESTATE

English-language Tour of Weissenhof Estate Architecture
Sunday, June 12th at 12:45
Location: Weissenhof Estate, 70191 Stuttgart-Killesberg
Nearest Station: Kunstakademie (Bus 44 from Hauptbahnhof)
Cost: €5 per person (max. 20 participants)

The Weissenhof Estate in Stuttgart (Weissenhofsiedlung and the Weissenhofmuseum im Haus Le Corbusier) is a unique look into the forward-thinking architectuWeissenhofsiedlungral and design minds of the late-1920s.

This distinctive residential building exhibition known as “Neues Bauen” (or ‘new build’) reflected the societal and cultural changes of the early 20th century.

Starting in 1927, seventeen architects under the artistic direction of Ludwig Mies van der Rohe created a unique residential scheme for modern urban residents. The architects participating in the exhibition were known among their peers as part of the international avant garde. Largely shunned and condemned by the Third Reich; today they are among the most notable masters of modern architecture.

The semi-detached homes designed by Le Corbusier are aesthetic, social and technical examples of the ever-changing architectural attitudes of the time. Following extensive restoration of the interiors, the façades, and the grounds, the structure is now open to visitors.

Please join the IWCS for a 90-minute tour through the grounds and the museum on Sunday, June 12th. We will meet at 12:45 and start the tour 13:00. This tour is open to members and family members. Participants are asked to prepay €5 per person and the club will cover the cost of the tour and the remainder of the entrance fees.

To RSVP, please use the contact form below or reply in the pending Facebook event.
