FAMILY MUSHROOM FORAGING TOUR
Sunday, October 14th from 13:00
Location: Schorndorf area (exact location published 1 week beforehand)
To RSVP with host Alex Elwin, use the pending Facebook event or contact form below – Prepayment deadline is September 30th

Autumn is mushroom season! But which are edible and which not? What is cauliflower fungus? Can one eat giant puffballs? Which fungi can be used as tinder? Fewer and fewer people these days are sure, so we’ve booked a guided walk through the Schwäbisch woods to learn everything there is to know on the subject with abenteuerreich Erlebnistouren.

During this unique event, an experienced guide will show us how to determine if a particular mushroom is edible, how to harvest it and also how to cook it. This 2-3 hour tour will also include a small tasting.

Although we will be greeted in English, most of this tour will be in German, so be prepared to work your brains, learn some new vocabulary, and have your kids or fellow members translate if necessary. Bring along worn-in walking shoes/boots, a waterproof jacket, a camera, a penknife, a small basket or other container, and a notebook and pen. We’ll find out the exact meeting place nearer the time.

Current IWCS members and their entire family are welcome to join this event and costs will be partially subsidized by the club. Children (up to age 13) are free and two adults or teenagers are invited to attend at the discount price of €25 per person. Additional adults are welcome to join but will pay full price (€39 per person).

We have reserved space for 15 adults and 5 children but can add more to this reservation up to 25 people total. If there is huge demand for this event we can open a second reservation for another group on the same day. To reserve your spot, please RSVP in the pending Facebook event or use the contact form below if you are not on Facebook.

To confirm your reservation, please transfer the  €25/€39 per person to the IWCS bank account no later than September 30th. If you have any extenuating circumstances that keep you from getting the funds to us by that date, please speak directly with the host so we don’t assume you are no longer interested.

Prepayments are non-refundable after the payment deadline. Members who have to cancel at the last minute are welcome to find another member or guest to send in their place.

Come join us on May 3rd to learn more about the spring festival celebrated in Japan known as Children’s Day.

This takes place on the last day of Golden Week, the longest break in the Japanese working calendar, when businesses usually close for up to 9–10 days. Landscapes across Japan are decorated with koinobori (carp streamers) from April to early May to wish children a good future and that they will grow up healthy and strong.

We will also be making and eating traditional snacks for this event, as well as our own carp streamers and learning a few Japanese phrases along the way.

This event is for members only and is fully sponsored by the club. To RSVP, please use the pending Facebook event in the members’ group, or use the contact form below if you are not on Facebook.

Members Only: Tour of the Porsche Factory (+1 Event)

buildings-1851246_1920PORSCHE FACTORY TOUR
Friday, March 2nd at 9:45
Meeting place: Porsche Museum, Porscheplatz 1, 70435 Stuttgart-Zuffenhausen
Nearest station: Neuwirtshaus (S) or Salzwiesenstrasse (U)
Host: Michelle Moore

In an age when most of its competitors have been absorbed into larger manufacturers, Porsche remains a staunchly — and profitably — independent maker of high-performance sports cars. The Porsche name has become synonymous with sports cars and race cars because that is what company founders Ferdinand Porsche and his son Ferdinand (“Ferry”) set out to build when they first set up shop with 200 workers in 1948.

We’ve booked a March tour of the famous Porsche factory in Stuttgart-Zuffenhausen for IWCS members and a +1 guest. This is not the usual museum tour but a private behind-the-scenes look at the factory itself, just for us!

Our English-language tour for 15 participants will take approximately two hours and require us to walk roughly three kilometers, including stairs. For safety reasons, they may not be able to show us all production areas, but they will try. Because this is an active factory, there are safety requirements that we will need to follow.  You must wear closed-toe shoes for this tour. Additionally, we will not be allowed to bring our mobile phones/cameras into the factory – they will be kept for us at the cash desk during the tour, or lockers are available. Please see the complete list of safety rules at the end of this post.

The member cost for this event is €6 per person, to be paid in advance no later than February 23rd. You will receive our bank details for the transfer when you RSVP for the event.

This is a +1 event, which means:

  • Any IWCS member plus one guest are welcome to attend.
  • Your +1 can be a partner, spouse, child over the age of 12, or friend.
  • You and your guest each pay the member cost listed above.

To start the reservation process, please RSVP in the pending Facebook event or use the form below to contact the host, Michelle Moore, if you are not on Facebook.

All prepayments should be in our bank account no later than the 23rd of February.

Members Only Outing to the Bärensee

Baerensee

BÄRENSEE OUTING
For all members and their families (including pets!)
Sunday, April 22nd at 13:00
Meeting point: Bärenschlössle im Rotwildpark, Mahdentalstraße 14, 70569 Stuttgart
Nearest station: Most easily reached by car, but you can take the 92 bus from Üniversität and then walk
Hosts: Alex & George Elwin

Come join us for a family-friendly outdoor event where we will explore the area around the Bärenschlößle, a former baronial hunting lodge which has now been lovingly restored  into a cosy restaurant on two levels, serving Flammkuchen and other German favorites.

In order to secure a sufficient supply of drinking water for the people of Stuttgart, Duke Christoph had a dam built in 1566 which created the Pfaffensee and then later the Bärensee and Neue See. This area is now a wonderful place to explore at any time of the year with its picnic and grill areas and countless walks.

Alex and George will have several options on offer with activities available for those with children and two different lengths of walks for those who want to exercise their dogs or themselves.

Afterwards we will all meet back at the Bärenschlößle for coffee and cake/ice cream inside or out, depending on weather. You can even bring a picnic if you are feeling hardy and the weather isn’t terrible. It may well still be chilly out – often it snows in April in Stuttgart!

For questions or to RSVP, please visit the pending event in our members Facebook group or use the contact form below if you don’t have Facebook.

CLOTHING SWAP TO BENEFIT FRAUEN HELFEN FRAUEN
For IWCS members +1 guest (ladies only!)
Sunday, March 25th at 14:00
Location: Billie’s House in Leonberg
Limit 10 guests – donation of 10 euros per person requested

Hosts: Billie Schoeler and Claire DeVaney

**This post was updated to reflect a change in the date of this event from March 18th to March 25th**

You know those clothes that you put on, then take off again thinking “I love it, but it’s just not me”? Those ones that looked good on the hanger but just don’t feel right? We all have them…so why not come along to our clothes swap and share them.

Here’s how it works: bring along some good quality women’s clothing, shoes, or accessories to swap with one another (please no used bathing suits, lingerie etc.). And not just clothes! Feel free to bring along gently worn shoes, handbags, jewelery, scarves and unopened beauty products to swap.

Please bring items you’d be happy to give to your friends NOT things that need to be binned. We’ll need clothes of all sizes and they must be washed, ironed, and in good condition (no holes or stains).

We are requesting that each guest bring 10 euros per person as a donation to cover some drinks, nibbly bits, and a donation to Frauen helfen Frauen.

This is a +1 event, which means:

  • Any IWCS member plus one (female) guest are welcome to attend.
  • Your +1 can be a friend or adult family member.
  • This event is limited to 10 guests total.

To start the reservation process, please RSVP in the pending Facebook event or use the form below to contact the hosts if you are not on Facebook.
