Members +1 Event: Fondue Lunch Fundraiser

Do you love cheese??? Member Michelle Moore loves to cook and is looking for 8-10 friends to share a delicious cheese fondue lunch to raise money for the Frauenhaus.

This decadent meal includes a glass or two of Sekt/wine and a bottomless cheese fondue with heaps of traditional and non -traditional accompaniments (vegetables, salad, fruits, and some meats).

This event is a charity fundraiser and Michelle is providing all the yummy ingredients. Participants are requested to make a cash donation of €15 at the door, 100% of which will go to Frauen helfen Frauen.

This is a +1 event, which means:

Any IWCS member plus one guest are welcome to attend
Your +1 can be a partner, spouse, adult child, or friend
You and your guest each pay the cost listed above

Payment is due on the day of the event, however you must confirm your reservation one week prior (at the latest) to Michelle via the pending Facebook event or using the form below if you aren’t on Facebook.

Members + Families Event: Alpaca Walk and Farm Tour

Since they were domesticated like their llama cousins around 5000 years ago, alpacas have been kept for their meat, wool, and as a super pack animal ideal for mountain treks. They can walk long distances on relatively little subsistence; they’re sure-footed and agile; and they’re super fluffy and cute!!

Alpacas are whimsical members of the camel family with lovely kind eyes and a gentle nature. In recent years their wooly faces and observant, calm demeanor has made them highly sought after walking companions.

We’ve organized an amazing day out with these gentle beasts for members and their families in May. It includes an alpaca-accompanied trek in Nürtingen followed by a tour of the farm with plenty of petting allowed. The gentle trek will last around 1 hour and will take in views over the Schwäbische Alb from Göppingen over Kirchheim to Reutlingen.

During the guided tour we will see the farm and furnished with all the knowledge we could ever need about alpaca care, diet and breeding as well as the fascinating role of alpacas today from therapy animals to wool production. As a parting gift, all adults will go home with a pair of alpaca wool socks!

You’re then invited to join us for lunch in Nürtingen if you wish (not included in cost of the tour).

There is a Hofladen on-site but best to bring water and perhaps a snack. We will walk in any weather. With any luck we’ll have sunshine but of course be prepared with weather-appropriate clothing such as a rain jacket, waterproof shoes, and so on.

The farm is best reached by car (or take a taxi from the Nürtigen station). If you would like to attend but don’t have access to a car, be sure to post in the Facebook event and we can try to arrange a car pool!

Members + Families Event: Outdoor Kitchen Herb and Wild Vegetable Tour

HERB AND WILD VEGETABLE FORAGING TOUR

Location: Schorndorf (exact location published 1 week beforehand)

€25/€39 per person, prepayment deadline – March 31st

Our favorite outdoor explorers, Abenteuerreich in Remstal, will be taking us on a guided walk this spring through the meadows and woods around Schorndorf to learn how to distinguish between poisonous and non-poisonous local plants and collect a goodly amount of the non-poisonous variety. At the end we will make a pesto from what we’ve collected to eat at an outdoor picnic.

Although we will be greeted in English, most of this tour will be in German, so be prepared to work your brains, learn some new vocabulary, and have your kids or fellow members translate if necessary (we did this on last year’s tour and there was no problem understanding at all!). Bring along worn-in walking shoes/boots, a waterproof jacket, a camera, a penknife, a small basket or other container, and a notebook and pen. We’ll find out the exact meeting place nearer the time.

Current IWCS members and their entire family are welcome to join this event and costs will be partially subsidized by the club. Children (up to age 13) are free and two adults or teenagers are invited to attend at the discount price of €25 per person. Additional adults are welcome to join but will pay full price (€39 per person).

Members Only – Art Night Painting Party

Some of you might remember our last painting party in 2016 – it was so popular that we are doing it again!

Under the instruction of local artist Ansa Afshar, we will be led step-by-step through the creation of your very own work of art that you can take home or give as a gift – real or gag. Art supplies are provided. We only ask that you wear painting clothing and/or bring an apron, an open mind, and a good mood.

This event will be held in Poffers Café in Stuttgart-Ost. Orders for food and drink will be taken starting at 18:30 and painting will begin promptly at 19:30. While we enjoy the soothing motions of painting, we can order more drinks and just enjoy our evening.

The cost of this event is €30 per person, paid in advance. The IWC Stuttgart will be subsidizing the remainder of the event fees for the evening. All food and drinks ordered are the responsibility of the member.

Family Event: Tour of the Stuttgart Observatory

Have you ever wanted to see the twinkling stars up close? Not the celebrity ones, of course, but the extra terrestrial ones, through the lenses of a giant telescope? Well, here’s your chance. Join us at the observatory on Uhlandshöhe to be introduced to the fascinating starry realm above.

The tour will be conducted in English, will last approximately 1.5 hours and will begin when full darkness has fallen and in the case of clear skies only. There is a maximum number of 20 people for this tour so sign up now to secure your place.

You are welcome to bring members of your immediate family ages 6 and up. This tour is sponsored by the club, but we are requesting donations of €10 per family or €5 for a person coming alone, to be collected in cash at the event.

Please keep in mind that this tour is weather-dependent and will be cancelled if there are clouds, as we will be unable to see anything. We will keep you posted!

MEMBERS ONLY EVENT – FRENCH BAKING WORKSHOP (+1)

If you remember the Petit Fours workshop from last year, you won’t want to miss this evening of French baking with the talented Geraldine Tran, a former IWCS member originally hailing from Paris. The theme is yet to be decided, but we will learn techniques for an assortment of small, tasty treats (either all sweet or some combination of sweet and savory).

The member cost for this event is €40, to be paid in advance. The International Women’s Club Stuttgart will be subsidizing the remainder of the fees for the class.

Members Only Clothing Swap to Benefit Frauen Helfen Frauen

You know those clothes that you put on, then take off again thinking “I love it, but it’s just not me”? Those ones that looked good on the hanger but just don’t feel right? We all have them…so why not come along to our clothes swap and share them.

Here’s how it works: bring along some good quality women’s clothing, shoes, or accessories to swap with one another (please no used bathing suits, lingerie etc.). And not just clothes! Feel free to bring along gently worn shoes, handbags, jewelry, scarves and unopened beauty products to swap.

Please bring items you’d be happy to give to your friends NOT things that need to be binned. We’ll need clothes of all sizes and they should be washed, ironed, and in good condition (no holes or stains).

We are requesting that each guest bring 10 euros per person as a donation to cover some drinks, nibbly bits, and a donation to Frauen helfen Frauen.

This is a +1 event, which means:

Any IWCS member plus one (female) guest are welcome to attend.
Your +1 can be a friend or adult family member.
This event is limited to 10 guests total.

Coming up on February 19, 2019 is our Annual General Meeting for all members (Jahreshauptversammlung) – not to be missed!

As a registered German Verein, we are required in our bylaws to hold this important member meeting during the first quarter of each year. All current members will receive an official invitation via email shortly.

As always, we will enjoy a delicious Swabian dinner (18:30) at the SSB Events Center at Waldau Park (near the TV tower) before starting our meeting at 20:00. We would love to see you all there at the meeting, even if you can’t attend the dinner.

Frauen Helfen Frauen Giving Tree 2018

In keeping with one of our favorite annual traditions, the IWCS is once again supporting the women of Frauen helfen Frauen e.V. by creating a virtual Holiday Gift Tree for them this December!

There are almost 30 women and children currently living in the Frauenhaus. Because this is a much smaller number than usual, this year IWC Stuttgart members will also have a chance to buy gifts for children in addition to the women.

If you would like to help, please contact Sandra using the contact form below. Once we have the numbers and ages, she will contact you to give you the go ahead to start shopping!

Please choose a gift valued between €15-20 and try to keep in mind that the shelter is multicultural and many of the families might not yet have strong German skills.

You can drop the gifts off at Sandra’s house in Stuttgart-Zazenhausen or mail them to her. She will also be collecting gifts at the Members Only Holiday Dinner as always.

Join us in December for our annual Holiday dinner and gift exchange! This is our chance to come together as a community and enjoy good food and fun during the magical German advent time.

This year’s dinner is being planned for a new location at the Stuttgarter Stäffele in Stuttgart-West. We have a gorgeous and cozy wine cellar reserved just for us and have put together some delicious Swabian menus together with their catering company (please see the menus and prices at the end of this post).

After dining, you are welcome to take part in our optional gift exchange, which is loads of fun every year. If you would like to participate, please bring a wrapped gift worth €15 (no gag or re-gifts please). Choose something you yourself would be happy to receive because with this exchange, that could very well happen!

As always, Sandra B is also organizing the Frauen helfen Frauen Virtual Giving Tree again this year and you are welcome to bring your wrapped gift along to give to her for delivery at this dinner. Check out this blog post for details!

And now to the dinner choices. We need us to give us your selection no later than November 30th and to pay for it no later than December 4th. Hurry to get your spot because the room only holds a maximum of 35 people!

Your menu choices:

Meat 1 – Schwäbischer Himmel (filets of pork and beef in a wine sauce) with Spätzle
Meat 2 – Zwiebelrostbraten (roast beef) with roasted potatoes (gluten free dish)
Fish – Salmon filet with vegetables and potatoes
Vegetarian – Orecchiette pasta with roasted pumpkin and cherry tomatoes in a parmesan cream sauce

Included with your meal:

A glass of Sekt upon arrival
Swabian appetizers
Cream of pumpkin soup (lactose intolerant alternative offered is a small salad)
Still and sparkling table water
Dessert – Cinnamon Apfelküchle with Bratapfel ice cream (can be served without ice cream for lactose intolerant)
