MEMBERS ONLY: Halloween Walking Tour of Esslingen (+1 event)

This historical walking tour will include a couple of “gruesome” stories that are fitting for this Halloween-day tour, lasting around 2 hours including time for questions and picture taking.

The tour is about 3000 steps, much of which is on cobblestone streets and there are two sets of stairs and one ramp to navigate. Because of the stairs, the tour is unfortunately not suitable for wheelchairs, but babies in strollers and carriers are fine (as long as they can be carried up about 12 stairs). Not recommended for very young children because of the scary stories we have been promised.

Current Covid-19 rules – social distancing and contact data collection are required (no masking or 3G). These rules can change at any time, so please keep an eye on the Facebook event for updates.

THIS IS A +1 EVENT, WHICH MEANS:

  • Any IWCS member plus one guest are welcome to attend.
  • Your +1 can be a partner, spouse, adult child, or friend (age: parental discretion)
  • You and your guest each pay the member cost listed below.

The cost of this event is €5 per person, paid in advance. The remainder of the tour costs will be sponsored by the IWCS and this is a Round Up For Charity event. All proceeds will benefit Frauen helfen Frauen.

There are 25 spaces available. To reserve your spot, please RSVP using the form below or respond in the pending Facebook event. To confirm your reservation, please transfer the  €5 per person to the IWCS bank account no later than Wednesday, October 27th . If you have any extenuating circumstances that keep you from getting the funds to us by that date, please speak directly with the host so we don’t assume you are no longer interested.

Prepayments are non-refundable after the payment deadline. Members who have to cancel at the last minute are welcome to find another member or guest to send in their place.

MEMBERS ONLY: CONVERSATIONS ON MODERN ART – TWO

MEMBERS ONLY: CONVERSATIONS ON MODERN ART – TWO
When to visit: Any time in February
Zoom meeting to discuss: Tuesday, February 16th at 10:00 OR 19:00
Your host: Alison Tyler

Since we can’t currently visit museums together, we’ve decided to try this pandemic-friendly alternative! The plan is to visit outdoor works of art in the Stuttgart area by yourself or with a friend sometime during the month, and then we all get together online to discuss what we’ve seen.

Think book club, but with art!

In February we will be discussing graffiti as an art form. A great place to start is the graffiti art exhibit in the main station in Stuttgart. The Stadt Palais and Kunst Museum also have graffiti exhibitions; although currently closed they have online materials to view.

Perhaps you have seen graffiti murals during your travels or in your current home town? For example, the town of Asperg have recently commissioned graffiti artists to decorate the tunnel into the train station.

Hopefully the art will generate a good deal of conversation. We welcome all opinions, both positive and negative, as long as all are respectfully given.

To take part and receive more details about where exactly to find this art, please RSVP in one of the Facebook events. Alison will be hosting a morning and an evening chat. If you are not on Facebook but would still like to check out the art and join one of the Zoom calls on the 16th, please use the contact form below.

Last month’s first ever treasure hunt/photo safari walk was so much fun that we immediately planned another one for February!

There are several ways to take part in this event:

  • Do the walk alone -OR- with a friend/another club member/members of your family/household (as allowed)
  • Do the walk at any time during the month of February -OR- walk the route on or before the February 5th Zoom call
  • Just enjoy the walk without the treasure hunt -OR- see if you can locate all of the treasures on Alex’s list and take photos/selfies or have kids make drawings of them
  • Upload your photos in the Facebook event to share AND/OR share them with the Zoom call on February 5th

There is no wrong way and many right ways to participate in this event! Check out this beautiful drone footage from Stuttgart Tourism to inspire yourself:

February’s walk starts fairly centrally, not far from Feuersee, and then climbs Karlshöhe and Hasenbergsteige. For those that want it there is also an extension taking you up Birkenkopf or Rubble Hill. So you need to be prepared for hills but can take your time as the villas you go past along the way are so interesting to look at you’ll be in no hurry to race by!

How to RSVP

If you would like to receive information about the February route and the list of items to find, please RSVP in the Facebook event. If you do not have Facebook, you can still do the walk and the Zoom call! Use the form below to contact Alex and she can send you the information via email.

MEMBERS ONLY: CONVERSATIONS ON MODERN ART

MEMBERS ONLY: CONVERSATIONS ON MODERN ART
When to visit: Any time in January
Zoom meeting to discuss: Tuesday, January 26th at 10:00
Your host: Alex Elwin

Since we can’t currently visit museums together, we’ve decided to try this pandemic-friendly alternative! The plan is to visit outdoor works of art in the Stuttgart area by yourself or with a friend sometime during the month, and then we all get together online to discuss what we’ve seen.

Think book club, but with art!

In January we will be discussing the outdoor art at the Wilhemspalais. They have recently added a temporary extra modern sculpture to the existing ones of King Wilhelm and his dog (1990, Hermann-Christian Zimmerle) and Datenbank (2019, Erik Sturm) in its outdoor space near Charlottenplatz. The piece, called “S.21. The Monument – Chronicle of a grotesque derailment” by Peter Lenk, will be in this spot only until March 2021.

You will want to read up on all three sculptures before visiting them, and familiarize yourself with the Stuttgart 21 railway project and its history, especially if you are new to the area.

Hopefully the art will generate a good deal of conversation. We welcome all opinions, both positive and negative, as long as all are respectfully given.

To take part and receive more details about where exactly to find this art, please RSVP in the pending Facebook event. If you are not on Facebook but would still like to check out the sculptures and join the Zoom call on the 26th, please use the contact form below.

Your host and guide: Alex Elwin

After spending so many weeks under curfew, we are all ready to get outside! Because we still can’t meet up and do things together, our activities team has come up with an alternative event that is part solo and part social!

“Join us” on a walking route around Stuttgart-Mitte suitable for adults and kids! Activities Coordinator Alex Elwin will be giving us a list of treasures to find along the way to make the walk more fun.

There are several ways to take part in this event:

  • Do the walk alone -OR- with a friend/another club member/members of your family/household (as allowed)
  • Just enjoy the walk without the treasure hunt -OR- see if you can locate all of the treasures on Alex’s list and take photos/selfies or have kids make drawings of them
  • Join the Zoom call on January 9th to touch base with other members -AND/OR- upload your photos in the Facebook event to share
  • Do the walk at any time during the month of January -OR- walk the route on or before the January 9th Zoom call

There is no wrong way and many right ways to participate in this event! Check out this beautiful drone footage from Stuttgart Tourism to inspire yourself:

January’s walk will start at Wilhelmpalais on Charlottenplatz and head up into the hills to the observatory and then back down again. The route is suitable for strollers and wheelchairs but there is an incline to the first half of the walk.

If this one is successful, we will have another walking route with more treasures to find next month!

If you would like to receive information about the January route and the list of items to find, please RSVP in the pending Facebook event. If you do not have Facebook, you can still do the walk and the Zoom call! Use the form below to contact Alex and she can send you the information via email.

MEMBERS ONLY VIRTUAL EVENTS WINTER 2021

The December Coronavirus rules have been announced and we are facing at least another month of being unable to meet in person. At this point, it’s hard to say if we will be able to hold regular meetings this upcoming winter at all.

It’s time to get creative!

At our delightful activities planning Zoom meeting in November, we brainstormed up a few new events that combine actually leaving the house with a community activity we can do online! You will see us roll out a couple of these new hybrid events starting in January:

  • CONVERSATIONS ON MODERN ART – This activity is meant to replace tours of local art museums for the time being. Members will be given directions on how to find a public art installation (sculptures, for example) to visit on their own before the date of a scheduled Zoom meeting. Then at the meeting we will use the art as a starting point for our discussion – a bit like a book club, but with art!
  • TREASURE HUNT WALKS – Members will be given a walking route to follow somewhere in the city and a list of clues to try and find on their own before the scheduled Zoom meeting. See how many clues you can find and get some exercise in the process!

Under the current rules, the outdoor part of both events can be done alone, with your household/family, or with one other friend or club member.

Hopefully these ideas (and a few others we are working on) will keep us busy, connected, and safe for as long as necessary this winter. We’d love to hear any feedback or additional suggestions or ideas via the comment form below!
